Lent

I'm giving up sugar and cream in my coffee for Lent, along with not watching or listening to the news. I don’t even enjoy the news and only listen to National Public Radio as it is, but even NPR has been too doom and gloom for me lately.

I see Lent as a time for quiet reflection; rich in character building rewards for sacrificing something you enjoy. Lent is humbling, yet also builds gumption. We are giving up something we love for a higher power, but really lengthening our inner power as we are learning to balance aspects of our life that are unbalanced. Lent, which means lengthening, sings in harmony with the changing season as the daylight hours grow longer and we remove mundane pleasures in order to hear the beautiful song of the universe.

The idea itself is older than today’s religious boundaries, but for those of you Heathens who think this is a little too Christian, you can try something similar from Candlemas to Ostara.

Ever since Candlemas at Kenny's, I've desired more elaborate prayer and ritual. There is also an inner nagging for something Buddhist. Haha, how knows where these desires come from, I'm just following my authentic self as Sarah Ban Breathnach would say. I've begun a nightly Lent prayer ritual with candles, incense, prayer beads, prayer scarf and the Buddhist Chant: om mani padme hum. This ritual is much more involved than my normal spiritual ongoing. It's sort of how Inara Sera might practice Lent. I guess that's just what I was going for!

Lastly, a quick look at my prayer beads. I made these myself a few years ago when the Ya-Ya's and I did a series of beading workshops together. We called our workshops Beading Bitches - no shorted of crass and charm with us! These beads are Pietersite & Blue Agate with a spell box on the tail.

Cloth Diapers

Everything I know about cloth diapers I learned from Amanda and anyone new to this needs an "Amanda", someone to show you the ropes and answer early morning phone calls with questions. Not because cloth diapering is hard, but because it's foreign to what most of us know about diapering. Newbies need a someone who has been there to tell us we're doing it right. So, find someone, before baby comes, to help you get set up. It's one of the most rewarding tasks I've ever done, not to mention economical.

I know nothing about designer diapering, the last thing I need is an expensive hobby! I use want was gifted to me by the Ya-Ya's at my baby shower, pre-folds and velcro covers - I wouldn't use anything else!

Fashions of Angelus

Whoever said you can't dress up little boys didn't have an Angelus. I think the trick to hats is start them young, keep it up and don't make a big fuss. Instead of "oohh your hat is soo cute", just act like it's as natural and as important as shoes.

A Lion Among Men: Volume Three in the Wicked Years

"He hadn't yet learned enough experience with humans to know that the thing they hold dearest to their hearts, the last thing they relinquish when all else is fading, is the consoling belief in the inferiority of others " ~ A Lion Among Men: Volume Three in the Wicked Years by Gregory Maguire

Sowing Seeds

Sowing seeds indoors. Suggested listening: Mozart, Piano Concerto No. 26 in D

Another method I have used, but completely forgot about this year, is to fold newspaper into "cups". Put the soil and seeds in the paper cup and in the spring you can put the whole thing right in the ground, no plastic to get rid of.

Angelus mists the seeds.

This cute little set was a birthday gift from Auntie Luna, it's made in America from recycled milk jugs by Green Toys. Angelus loved it! I can't wait to see his face when little plants appear.

Interview with Hex

Next comes an interview with my very charming and funny Ya-Ya friend Hex, author of A Tangled Skein.

You've decided to have another baby! Congrats! You've talked about getting your vessel ready, what advice do you have for others in need of a body tune up?

Become a label reader and make smarter food selection choices. After all, whatever you ingest is going to be shared :D. Also time to get more active. Even if you are not the most mobile person (like yours truly), any little extra effort will help. Pools are the friend of the injured. Less strain and still get results. CANNONBALL!!! Also time to remember to feed the soul. Regardless of your spiritual (or lack thereof) affiliations, everyone needs to do things that create bliss in their lives. For some it's attending religious services, other folks achieve it by giving of themselves to other people, some just need quiet time and space. Whatever you require to bring more bliss into your life, Do It! There is no shortcut to spiritual well being.

Being one of the smartest, wittiest women I know, it's no surprise that your son is also a boy genius with a great imagination. Is it inherited or did you have parenting tips to share?

Awww...you're making me blush! I'd like to claim heredity, but I can't in all honesty. I believe the more open and honest we are with our children and the least amount of preconceived notions and limitations we impose on them, the more room they have to grow and become exceptional little human beings. Instead of discounting their harmless fantasies, encourage them to keep dreaming. As long as you instill a good sense of reality vs. fiction, there is no need to rob them off the joys of the imagination. We have such a small amount of time to enjoy our childhood before the rest of the world comes crashing down on us, so it's out job as parents to prepare our children for the future without crushing their sense of wonder. It's a fine line sometimes, but not impossible. Unless you KNOW something as fact (and I mean without a shadow of a doubt...something you can prove or disprove definitely) there is no need to act like you do. This is a form of deception for our children and helps to shackle them with the same limited mindsets that generations have been imposing on us all. My son is aware that I don't have all the answers and I am VERY open to learning new things and he respects me more for it. When he claims to have witnessed something "outrageous" and asks me for validation, even if I don't personally believe in such things, I don't discount the possibilities. I am not omnipotent and maybe there is such things out there I have not witnessed. The key is to judge if it is ultimately harmful to your child or not. If not, let it be. Too many kids nowadays don't have the sense of wonder and imagination that our future needs. It's a shame.

What is your favorite recipe to make?

My favorite recipe is actually hard to say. I love the peanut butter/chocolate no-bake cookies my mom used to make growing up, but I also enjoy coming up with new creations on the fly. I rarely use pre-conceived recipes as I am an experimenter extraordinaire! lol Fortunately for my family, I'm pretty good at it heh.

Knitting is hard to learn! A lot more complicated than crocheting. What is your advice for a newbie?

See, I have to disagree. Crochet baffles me to NO end! Knitting is like instinct. :D However, some advice I would give is to keep at it. One isn't going to become Elizabeth Zimmerman instantly. It helps to have support of knitty friends around to help you, but in a pinch there are WONDERFUL resources online (like Knittinghelp.com) who offer free videos. It also helps to keep your craft in perspective instead of getting swamped with the big picture. Remember, knitting involves only TWO stitches. That's it! Everything else is a variation of those two. Literally take it slow, one stitch at a time. Don't worry about how it will all turn out, just focus on each little stitch as it's being worked. Before you know it, it finds a way to sort itself out. :D

I'm sure they are all your babies, but do you have a favorite knitted project you've done? Do you have a photo?

OMGs, YES! I LOVE the Hello Cthulhu [photo to right] I knit for my friend Raven's baby girl. The pattern was fun to work and it turned out ADORABLE. I have several requests for more of them, in fact lol. I'm totally hooked on knitting Amigurumi now. It's addicting!:D

Dutchess Loves To Read

Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood - A quintessential website for Ya-Ya's, find out your ya-ya name, recipes, ya-ya inspired games and more.

Excerpt from Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells:

"Sidda is a girl again in the hot heart of Louisiana, the bayou world of Catholic saints and voodoo queens. It is Labor Day, 1959, at Pecan Grove Plantation, on the day of her daddy's annual dove hunt. While the men sweat and shoot, Sidda's gorgeous mother, Vivi, and her gang of girlfriends, the Ya-Yas, play bourrée, a cut-throat Louisiana poker, inside the air-conditioned house. On the kitchen blackboard is scrawled: SMOKE, DRINK, NEVER THINK--borrowed from Billie Holiday. When the ladies take a break, they feed the Petites Ya-Yas (as Ya-Ya offspring are called) sickly sweet maraschino cherries from the fridge in the wet bar.

That night, after dove gumbo (tiny bird bones floating in Haviland china bowls), Sidda goes to bed. Hours later, she wakes with a gasp from a mean dream. She tiptoes to the side of her mother's bed, but she cannot awaken Vivi from her bourbon-soaked sleep.

She walks barefoot into the humid night, moonlight on her freckled shoulders. Near a huge, live oak tree on the edge of her father's cotton fields, Sidda looks up into the sky. In the crook of the crescent moon sits the Holy Lady, with strong muscles and a merciful heart.

She kicks her splendid legs like the moon is her swing and the sky, her front porch. She waves down at Sidda like she has just spotted an old buddy.

Sidda stands in the moonlight and lets the Blessed Mother love every hair on her six-year-old head. Tenderness flows down from the moon and up from the earth. For one fleeting, luminous moment, Sidda Walker knows there has never been a time when she has not been loved. "

Get Fit, Go Play

"Train with a specific goal in mind. Whether it's winning a tennis match, losing weight for a milestone birthday or running your first 5K, having a goal will elevate your motivation and increase your commitment. Interest fades when you make open-ended goals with no deadlines; the gym should be a means to an end. If you train and think like an athlete, you'll work harder, and your body will change as result." ~Jamie Milnes, Redbook February 2009

Angelus' 2nd Birthday

I did a train theme.

Beyond the train banner and decor, we had lots of balloons. Angelus was is high heaven.

For games and crafts, I had the kids make trains out of paper bags with train cut-outs, glue and crayons. While the kids made their bags, Ed went around the house hiding little people. With their trains finished, the kids went around the house picking up their passengers. After the scavenger hunt, the kids got juice boxes, peanuts and raisins.

Did I mention the balloons? Honestly, I think we could have just had the $2 worth of blow up balloons and the kids would have been thoroughly entertained.

Since Ed is currently laid off, I had to do everything on a tight budget this year. I saved money by making the cake myself, using Amanda's puzzle cake mold. I also hit the dollar store, a place I usually avoid because I can't find American made stuff, but I was pleasantly surprised to find most of what I needed was American made including the paper plates, cups, train cut-outs, tiny juice boxes, bags of peanuts, mini raisins boxes, paper bags and streamers! The dollar store has totally redeemed its self in my eyes. For food, I did oven ready hor’dourves and picked up on-sale pretzels, popcorn, chips and dip. Aunt Nancy brought hot wings. All in all, the party was about $50.

For the thank you cards, I'm going to fold construction paper in half, let Angelus color and sticker it. I'll write a thank you message and send a photo of him playing with their gift.

    Inara's Shuttle

Inara's shuttle from "Firefly" is one of my favorite decorating inspirations that I haven't been able to use yet. Unfortunately it doesn't translate into my current home.

A Buddhist design mix of Asian, Indian and Moroccan. A sanctuary for rituals, romance and feminine energy. Very dark and mysterious.

    Angelus' Nursey

    (Another repost)

Every woman imagines how they want to design their babies nursery right? It's one of those topics that come up when hanging out with the girlfriends, right after wedding dress styles and baby names.
We did the nursery in black and green, with a magical creatures theme (mostly dragons). I did NOT want to have a cutesy nursery with bright, in your face colors. I liked subtle and classic, with just a hint of vintage character. I struggled to make sure it wasn't too grown up feeling, but in the end it is perfect. It was my first big decorating project and Ed was a huge help in making this girls fantasy baby nursery come to life. Oh yea, Angelus seems to like it too, hee hee
These photos are from last year, but it looks the same.

Close up photos of the wallpaper that lines the nursery - the highlight of the room, in my humble opinion :)
