Bishop Park

We had a relatively warm weekend in the 40's go by, the crew and I didn't miss an opportunity to go to the park. By Monday morning another snow storm had covered us and the temperatures dropped again.

When I was young, I was fascinated to find out that the land mass across the water at our park as an entirely different country, Canada!

Snow White's Apple

I would normally make this in the fall, but who could pass up this big, juicy, red apple?

Apple, Honey and Peanut Butter Breakfast.

OK moms, these jelly jars are my favorite kid's cup: a plastic alternative, practically unbreakable, multi-functions as storage with a canning lid, made in the U.S.A, and very inexpensive. Find them in the canning section of any mega store!

Birds & Hookers

Friday morning was wonderful. I woke up to a fresh pot of Michigan Cherry coffee that Ed made before he left for his class. The sun was shinning, birds where singing, and I had absolutely nothing I had to do. Wonderful I tell you, wonderful. So the kids (Ruby and Angelus) laughed at the birds while I cleaned out my yarn bag (really, I said I had nothing to do) and worked on my Fanciful Twist blanket.

I wanna be a hooker, just like Mommy!

Here is my yarn bag. I thought this style of bag was called a carpet bag until I googled "carpet bag" and discovered that carpet bags are actually made of carpet (go figure), this is more like burlap on the outside with a pretty Indian motif. Anyone know what style bag this is? What do you think they doing, fighting or fanning each other?

My one and only hook, we've been together for more than 16 years. I purchased the fat hook that Angelus is using above, but I felt unfaithful using it and returned to my original hook, who felt unappreciated and hide on me for a few days but eventually forgave my indiscretion. We are in counseling.

Coming right along.

Sure she looks all sweet and cute, but in reality she is trying to torture me with her cold, wet nose.

The Paradoxical Commandments

People are often unreasonable, irrational and self-centered;
Love them anyway.

If you are kind, people may accuse you of selfish, ulterior motives;
Be kind anyway.

If you are successful, you will win some unfaithful friends and some genuine enemies;
Succeed anyway.

If you are honest and sincere, people may deceive you;
Be honest and sincere anyway.

What you spend years building, others could destroy overnight;
Built it anyway.

If you find serenity and happiness, some may be jealous;
Be happy anyway.

The good you do today, will often be forgotten;
Do good anyway.

Give the best you have, and it may never be enough;
Give your best anyway.

In the final analysis, it is between you and God;
It was never between you and them anyway.

The Paradoxical Commandments is both a poem and a book by Kent M. Keith. He wrote the poem as an undergraduate, and it has spread around the world often in slightly altered form. In 1997, Keith learned that the poem "The Paradoxical Commandments" had hung on the wall of Mother Teresa's children's home in Calcutta, India, and two decades after writing the original poem, Dr. Keith wrote a book of the same title expanding on the themes of the poem: Anyway: The Paradoxical Commandments: Finding Personal Meaning in a Crazy World. - source

10 Pounds Down!

Yea me!! I lost the first 10 pounds! I also won 2 of my January competitions!

Here's a little update on the weight loss resolution. January was good, but I needed to step it up a bit so in February I started to exercise daily for at least 15 minutes and I began using my fitday program to record everything I eat.

I also started to give myself one Day Of Indulgence a week, which helped improve my mood considerably! Even though I don't mind my calories on my Day Of Indulgence, I still record everything I ate into my fitday program, so I can see what I'm eating on average. For example I may consume 4000 calories on a Day Of Indulgence, but only 1600 calories a day for the rest of the week. Including my Day Of Indulgence, I average about 2,000 calories a day and I'm loosing about 1.5 pounds a week, but my goal for the rest of the month is to get that average down to 1,900 calories a day and hopefully average loosing 2 pounds a week.

I still have 4 competitions going on, with my co-workers, Julie, Jessica and Pagan Center. They are great motivators for me

The February Sum Up:
• An average of 1800-1900 calories a day.
• One Day Of Indulgence a week
• At least 15 minutes a day of exercise (Pagan Center Healthy Daily Challenge)
• At least 3 non-starchy vegetables day (Pagan Center Healthy Daily Challenge)

I only count calories and fiber. Fiber really really helps me stay full and avoid hunger. You can only get fiber fiber from plants, so it's all healthy foods. Do you know Peas have the most fiber compared to any other vegetable (cup for cup)?

Here is my favorite high fiber breakfast:

Breakfast Burrito: Sauteed onions and scrambled egg. Topped with peas and cheese. Wrapped in a warm whole grain tortilla. Depending on the tortilla you buy, this has 7-14 grams of fiber and about 416 calories. Don't be afraid of whole grain tortillas, they taste just as good as plain white ones! With a cup of coffee, this keeps me full until lunch.

Friday Night Fish Dinners, Yea Lent Is Here!

Time again for the observance of Lent, a time of quiet reflection and self sacrifice. Even though my catholic days as a child are long gone, I like to think of myself as being above religious boundaries and thus participate in the rituals of Lent. Not to mention, I seem to have a catholic craving lately ::giggle:: I may just attend a mass before this trip it through.

So anyway, Lent is cool in my book. I enjoyed a few paczkis yesterday and I now have my prayer beads and prayer scarf ready for nightly chants. I'm sacrificing table salt for the next 40 days, but I promise not to be a person who constantly complains about their concession. Gee whizz, talk about missing the point.

The Pagan History of Lent

The word lent comes from the Anglo-Saxon word lencten which means spring, which was derived from the Anglo-Saxon word lenctentid (pronounced LENG-ten-teed), which means the time of lengthening and flowering. The entire spring season was called Lenctentid. The ancient Anglo-Saxons (and other pagans) celebrated the return of spring with rioteous fertility festivals commemorating their goddess of fertility and of springtime, Eastre. In fact, the word Easter is derived from the Scandinavian Ostara and the Teutonic Ostern or Eastre, both pagan goddesses. The complete month of April was called Eostur-monath with the entire month was dedicated to Eostre. The pagan religion taught that Eostre was one responsible for changing a bird into a rabbit, this then is how the rabbit became an Easter symbol. Rabbits symbolize the fertility of springtime. It should be noted that the rabbit's capacity of abundant production of young is especially great at this time of year. I should also tell you that most ancient races, including the Anglo-Saxons, included spring festivals to celebrate the rebirth life, using the Egg was a symbol of fertility, life and re-birth. This is old Latin proverb catches this idea -- Omne vivum ex ovo. This means "all life comes from an egg".

So, how did such pagan things as Lent and Easter (I am not referring to the blessed Resurrection of Jesus Christ) come into the church? Alexander Hislop gives us the answer -- "To conciliate the Pagans to nominal Christianity, Rome, pursuing its usual policy, took measures to get the Christian and Pagan festivals amalgamated, and, by a complicated but skillful adjustment of the calendar, it was found no difficult matter, in general, to get Paganism and Christianity—now far sunk in idolatry—in this as in so many other things, to shake hands" (The Two Babylons).

Rest and Relaxation

ahh, we had some much needed rest and relaxation at Weber's Inn over the weekend, now we're back refreshed and feeling great!

That smirk on my face preceeded a death threat to my husband for attempting to take my photo in my bathing suit.

My Tally:

March 1st: Started the Random Acts of Kindness Campaign!

March 2nd: Visited a friend in the hospital and brought flowers.

March 3rd: Glamourbombed the park with a message of love written in the snow. Also cleaned up my mom's kitchen while she slept (she had surgery on Monday).

March 4th: Purchased homemade tutu’s on Etsy to bestow on three very special little princesses.

March 5th: While in my car in a parking lot a woman approached me (scared the shit out of me) and said her cousins car was out of gas, did I have any money. Normally I would assume it was really for drugs and send a person like this on their way, but I gave her the benefit of the doubt and all the money I had.

March 6th: While in-line with my purchase, the lady next to me was very disappointed to find out that her purchase wasn't a part of the "big sale", so I gave her my 40% off coupon. She saved more than I would have anyway.

March 7th: Gave my niece a collection of sown seeds to take home and watch grow in cute little pots.

March 9th: Gave a cookie log to my Mother-in-Law.

March 10th: Payed for the car behind me at the drive-thru.

March 12th: Brought 2 new bags of puppy treats to the newest four legged member of my extended family.

March 13th: Reported a shoplifter to the manager of the store I was shopping at. I don't know if the person stopped was happy about it, but the manager was grateful.

March 16th: Brought my mother coffee.

March 17th: Distributed 3 wish tickets

March 20th: Brought tulips to a friend.

March 24th: Handed out a couple tu-tu's.

March 27th: At a Lia Sopia party, I bought a necklace for one of the t’weens in attendance with her mom instead of buying something for myself.

March 30th: Gave my Mother-in-Law a pretty spring flower wreath for her door.
Donated to SpiritPhoenix's Susan G Komen 3 Day Walk.

March 31st: Brought cookies to my Aunt and Uncle.

Angelus' 3rd Birthday Party

Angelus' birthday party was a bunch of fun! We didn't have snow to go sledding, but we carried the winter theme indoors. Angelus helped me make paper snowflakes that we hung from the ceiling and we blew up lots of white balloons for "snow ball" fights. Then there was Angelus' Snowman cake...

The kids got to make their own hot cocoa mugs. These cups have a paper insert they were able to personalize with stickers and crayons, then fill with hot cocoa and marshmallows till their little hearts burst.

Dale played guitar while we sung Happy Birthday!

The Snowman Cake:
Start with two circles.

Add white frosting and coconut to mimic snow (I also made some cupcakes with just frosting for the guests who don't like coconut).

Add candy.

Devour!
