Face Paint and Halloween Makeup

I loathe being the bearer of bad news, raining doom and gloom over Halloween fun, but this study is to upsetting not to warn moms and dads.

The Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, a national coalition of nonprofit health and environmental groups, sent 10 children’s face paints to an independent lab to test for heavy metals, and also reviewed ingredient labels of Halloween products sold at a seasonal holiday store. The findings, compiled in the new report, "Pretty Scary," include:

• Ten out of 10 children’s face paints contained lead at levels ranging from 0.05 to 0.65 parts per million (ppm).
• Six out of 10 children’s face paints contained the potent skin allergens nickel, cobalt and/or chromium at levels ranging from 1.6 to 120 ppm – far exceeding industry safety recommendations of 1 ppm.
• Snazaroo Face Paint, labeled as “non-toxic” and “hypoallergenic,” contained some of the highest levels of lead, nickel and cobalt found in the study.

Fear not! Turn that frown upside down and cover it with beet juice blood! Halloween is undoubtedly THE holiday for creativity and imagination, use food and other natural products to create pretty wicked face paint without the worry.

Face Paint Made with Food

Make sure young children understand they can’t eat these paints unless you make them without the base. Test a small patch of skin first to make sure your child isn’t allergic to the food you’re using.

Ingredients:
-Base of safe, unscented lotion (search Skin Deep for safe options) OR pure cocoa butter (available at health food stores) OR safe, fluoride-free toothpaste (search Skin Deep; avoid mint flavors, as they can make skin tingly)
-Turmeric, raspberries, blackberries, blueberries, beets, avocado, spirulina, cocoa, chocolate sauce, squid ink or other colorful foods, juices, herbs and spices

Instructions:
Yellow: Add 1/4 tsp. and a large pinch of stale turmeric to base.

Pink: Using a sieve, mash the juice from 3 fresh or thawed frozen raspberries, blackberries or beets directly into the base. Or, use a deeply colored berry juice or puree.

Mint green: With a fork, mash 1/4 of a small avocado until creamy. Mix this into your base.

Emerald green: Add small amount spirulina or bright green chlorophyll to base.

Purple: Using a sieve, mash the juice from several fresh or frozen blueberries into the base. Or, use blueberry juice.

Brown: Add cocoa powder or chocolate sauce to base.

Black: Use a small amount of squid ink in base for true black.

White: Mix powdered sugar and water.

Under Autumn's Spell

"Just after the death of flowers,
And before they are buried in snow,
There comes a festival season
When nature is all aglow."
- Author Unknown

Write a secret upon a leaf,
One that is a burden to keep,
Allow the wind to give you releif,
As he steals it like a theif.

Unless the secret you want to air,
Then lock the leaf away with care,
Only when the written words wear,
Reveal the truth you wish to share.

Witches' Ball 2010

There's a place downtown,
Where the freaks all come around.
It's a hole in the wall.
It's a dirty free for all.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.

There's a place I know
If you're looking for a show.
Where they go hardcore
And there's glitter on the floor.

And they turn me on.
When they Take It Off.

Primpin'

Brandy, Moonstone & I. Moonstone's ensemble was just gorgeous this year!

Some Pagan Center members and Jesus. Jesus likes us; it's his followers that have issues. Normally the Witches Ball is not a costume party, but this years theme was "Black Cats & Pointy Hats", so we went with it.

Ya-Yas! Raven, Kelly, Me & Moonstone.

Shakin' my tail feathers.

I ♥ Hubby.

Doing the Spiral Dance.

I woke up the next morning covered in glitter, smelling like tequila and very hungover. Another great Ball comes and goes!

Witches' Ball Memories

The Michigan Witches' Ball is a magical night of music, food, and dancing with hundreds of Vamps, Pagans, Witches, Druids, Goths, Faerie Folk, Magical Folk, and the like. This non-profit event is 14 years strong and held annually to promote religious tolerance and to celebrate Samhain.

2004: My first Witches Ball! I made it on court for Queen of the Ball, which is why I'm doing the limbo, but I didn't win that year. I had so much fun and felt so welcome by my community.

2005: Me and Raven showing the love.

2006: Kelly & I and more lovin'.

2007: I made it! I was Queen of the Ball!

Moonstone & I. Can you tell I'm a touchy feely kinda gal?

Detroit 187

My Favorite TV show right now! The only big mistake I've caught so far is one of the cops said "Do you want a soda?". No one around here calls it soda, everyone calls it "pop".

Hallowe'en in Greenfield Village

Ready for a Halloween adventure?

Come with me, on my broom, I'll take you to a frightful and wonderful place...

We will step back in time to a turn-of-the-20th century American Hallowe’en. Follow an endless path of hand-carved jack-o-lanterns searching for tricks and treats, spirits and ghouls.

"Wow, look at this place!"

"Uh oh, look out!"

Angelus: "Don't worry, I'll protect you."
Trinity: "No, I'll protect you!"

The gypsy fortune teller assures Angelus a rich and prosperous future.

How nice, we've found an ancestor!

No don't go into the light! You'll leave this magical place!

Ahhhhh! The Headless Horseman! Quick, go into the light!!

Lately, You Might Find Angelus....

Learning how to color inside the lines. A completely useless skill, like algebra.

Dancing a jig at the Wigs 4 Kids Benefit Gala.

Giving his best friend, PaPa, a good luck kiss before he runs his 10K race.

Putting a stick in his back pocket, cause that's what boys do.

Picking out a perfectly imperfect pumpkin.

Feeding a sheep.

Feeding a cow.

Growing-up way to fast for Mommy.

Updated Bathroom

Before....

The Work...
Prep that wall boy!

The floor is my favorite. 6" wide vinyl wood planks (you can't put real wood in a bathroom). The floor is called a floating floor, so unlike regular vinyl, we didn't have to pull up the old floor before laying the new one down. Thanks to Hubby, it looks beautiful!

After....
My inspiration was that current bathroom trend infecting households - a spa like atomsphere. ahhhhh. relax. I used clean, smooth surfaces with natural elements: wood, glass, stone, plant life. Neutral colors with splashes of green and pops of earthy black. We added a rain shower fixture, and let me tell you, I'm running late most everyday now; I never want to let the shower!
